Supporting you on your aviation journey
There is nothing better than watching and helping people achieve their ambitions, be they large or small – often small objectives turn into bigger ones as time goes on!
My aim in relation to aviation is to help people reach and surpass their personal goals. Having instructed both in aeroplanes and Air Traffic Control, I can proudly say that I have assisted many people reach and surpass such aims.
All people are individuals and require changes in teaching (and learning) styles. I hope that is what I am able to offer in developing pilots’ skills, in order that they will have the skills and confidence to go as far in their journey as they wish.
Testimonials
My time under the instruction of Laurance Harley for the purpose of completing the Restricted Instrument Rating was thoroughly enjoyable. Before our first lesson Laurance shared that none of what we were about to go and do was humanly possible – he then proceeded to guide me through a series of lessons that would build my capacity, bit by bit, until I emerged on the other side with a shiny new rating, some cautious optimism, and a great deal of respect for those that can competently fly in IMC under IFR. It is a big step to go under the hood and fly with sole reference to instruments, but having an instructor who can tailor your learning such that each lesson is challenging and beneficial is a big advantage. Laurance was able to do just that, ensuring that every bit of my capacity was consumed, forcing me to push the boundaries of my ability. Every time I sat in the aircraft, I would fly with more precision and with greater confidence. That’s not to say that no mistakes were made, indeed they were, but in every instance of miscalculation or poor execution there was a lesson, shared understanding, and progress. Laurance is very experienced, and if you can leave your ego at home, and come to him with an open mind, he will impart all the knowledge and appreciation you require to be found competent and capable. It is in fact, humanly possible, but only after training and with some dedication. I look forward to more lessons and nuggets of wisdom as Laurance shepherds me on the path to commercial proficiency.

Laurance is an exceptional instructor and true professional who goes the extra mile to ensure every student has more than just the core skills to pass their training course. I have completed my complex aircraft conversion, Instrument Rating and Commercial Pilot Licence with Laurance, with first time passes in all subsequent skills tests. Laurance ensured that my training was adapted to my needs & objectives and was completed efficiently within my time limitations. Laurance was also able to support me with understating multiple complex regulations, and my licence applications - ensuring I had everything I needed for my future flying. Moreover, his support doesn’t end there; Laurance is very approachable and will always do his best to answer any questions, concerns and offer advice when required. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning with Laurance and I am very grateful for his support. I hope to fly again with Laurance in the future to further develop my flying and airmanship skills.

Complex Conversion, Instrument Rating and CPL instructionAfter a very long break from IR flying (my theoretical exams were dangerously close to expiring), I sought about finding an IR instructor who could whip me into shape quickly. I was introduced to Laurance and we started pulling together a plan for refreshing all of my skills and getting me ready for the skills test. I was incredibly impressed with Laurance, he is clearly very experienced, and knowledgeable, and working as an Air Traffic Controller at a major airfield alongside instructing, his ATC knowledge helps bring another angle which is invaluable. His instructional manner and approach are pitched exactly at the right level providing feedback in a polite, professional, and constructive manner. Laurance goes the extra mile on the ground too, providing an excellent level of support in between flights. An absolute pleasure to fly with, if you are seeking a knowledge flying instructor I can't recommend Laurance enough.

Instrument Rating RenewalHaving previously held a PPL, that expired 20 years beforehand, I decided that I would try to regain my flying licence in my retirement. Things had certainly moved on since I first gained my PPL in 1975. Laurance was the perfect flying instructor to get me through my training with his extensive depth of knowledge and experience. He was always very calm and professional, no matter what I was doing, and provided great encouragement to me when I found something difficult. We had some fun too! I cannot recommend Laurance highly enough to anyone interested in advancing their flying skills.

PPL RenewalJust a short note to thank you for checking me out today Laurance. Your relaxed yet professional (and understanding!) approach very much appreciated. Thanks again.

PPL RenewalLaurance kindly agreed to undertake training for a conversion onto a Mooney M20E which I purchased with my brother-in-law in March 2020. Until then, much of my flying experience had been on a PA28 having acquired my PPL in 2019. The Mooney takes some getting used to as its characteristics and speed demand it to be flown accurately. My nerves, and excitement over the aircraft were all managed by Laurance as he taught me to fly and land the plane, and acquire a complex aircraft endorsement. Laurance is truly unique. Not only is he a stickler for precision and procedure, he is calm, wise and allows a student to make mistakes and learn from them. For me these are the hallmarks of an accomplished instructor. My situational awareness, radio work, and overall sense of confidence as a pilot has increased significantly. Laurance is also remarkably well connected and resourceful and never hesitates to offer assistance where he can, which I learned when we ran into a few technical issues with the Mooney. I am looking forward to undertaking my Restricted IR training with him. Above all, he’s a gentleman.

New Aircraft Familiarisation & Complex Sign-offI first met Laurance in 2008 when working towards my PPL at a local flying school. Having soloed the previous year, my training had stalled and I was struggling to complete the course. Laurance took time to understand the areas that I found challenging, and developed a plan to improve my practical flying skills and to build my confidence. This included flights in different aircraft and trips to other aerodromes, and culminated in successfully gaining my PPL. Laurance subsequently helped me to join a local flying syndicate where I remain an active member, and has continued to assist with check flights, cross channel checkouts and biennial revalidations. I particularly value the ongoing mentoring that Laurance provides, and his willingness to share his knowledge and experience. Laurance is a patient and knowledgeable flight instructor who takes an interest in the success of his students, and I would not hesitate to recommend him to any aspiring pilot!

PPL Training, Syndicate Advice, Cross-Channel Checkout, Mentoring, RevalidationsMy first flight with Laurance was my PPL Skill test back in 2016. I have been flying regularly with him since for aerobatics, the transition to complex aeroplanes, new types sign offs, night rating, multi engines and IR revalidation preparation. In my aviation career, I flew across Europe and the US with many different instructors and, I believe, none is on a par with Laurance. His aviation knowledge and experience go well beyond high standards while his professional, yet friendly attitude, makes every flight enjoyable and a learning experience. I cannot thank Laurance enough for all his support over the years in building my aviation baggage. I highly recommend Laurance as instructor or examiner to anyone, from students working towards their first solo and PPL to experienced CPL/ATPL pilots. Looking forward to the next flight together.

SEP RevalidationI started my flying journey with Laurance in 2013 - first completing the PPL, then complex conversion and more recently, an aerobatic rating. Approachable, friendly, knowledgeable - Laurance has always been available to answer queries or offer advice whenever asked. I truly believe that the calm and precise way he imparts knowledge ensures that pilots have a fuller understanding of flying, which enables them to be a better pilot. I'm thoroughly looking forward to continuing my training with him soon!

PPL & IMC / IR(R) RatingThank you Laurance for the lesson on Sunday, I loved it and it has only made me want to fly more.

IR(R) InstructionIn 2012 I retired after 43 years of professional flying. A few years later, missing recreational flying, I decided to reactivate my private licence. I flew a series of re-familiarisation flights (having not seen a light aircraft for 29 years!) followed by a ‘skills test’. The training package was expertly tailored to my needs with comprehensive briefings and patient flying sessions conducted in an efficient and friendly atmosphere. Having instructed myself for many years, I can wholeheartedly recommend Laurance.

Specialist Aviation AdviceIt was scary but not terrifying. Laurance put me at ease with his confidence and lightheartedness. He also doesn't make me feel silly in any way. I was scared, but I was able to enjoy it a bit. I've decided that my first goal is to get through a whole circuit, however long, and not be nervous at all and maybe on the next flight I'll go a little longer
